Learning Management Systems: Moodle Or Sakai?

I’ve been surveying Learning Management Systems (LMSs) over the last couple of days for a work project. The LMSs that I’ve been looking at must be Open Source and preferably written in PHP.

It looks like they are pretty similar in most ways – though I am not an educator, so it’s difficult for me to gauge systems on the lesson planning front.

I’ve read some really long, verbose, blog banter back and forth between users of Moodle and Sakai. Most of that got really academic and a lot of that was pointless brand-bashing.   My criteria is pretty simple: ease of installation and deployment, stability, extendability and customization. This install won’t be for a TRULY academic implementation but more of a internal training tool for an organization.

So what Open Source LMS would work best for us? Read the rest of this entry »

Memory Of Analog Bliss and The Panic Of Lost Pasts

As I sit here listening to The Beatle’s “You Never Give Me Your Money” from the Abby Road album, my mind has wondered back in time through vivid memories of simple moments in my youth. Moments representing the simple analog bliss of being… golden light of late afternoon peeping around the edges of sunglasses long ago lost.

Long ShadowsIt was a time before the digital world began to replace the analog world that I grew up in. Cars had no computers. They were mechanical and driven by material, physical means. Computers were still a novelty in the home. They were still high tech and almost sci-fi. Hand-held video game systems didn’t exist. Arcades were where we played video games – for $.25 per game! Cellphones had only recently began to be put in cars. Even pagers were still uncommon and weren’t possessed by non-professionals. Cable TV was still relatively new and so were VCRs. MTV played music videos. Read the rest of this entry »

Being interviewed for the nightly news

A group of us from JWT were out to lunch at Champps today and FOX News interviewed a few of us about the current hullabaloo regarding Fantasy Football.

Apparently, four guys got fired from their job for participating in Fantasy Football at work. Their company has a strict policy against gambling (obviously NOT an advertising/marketing firm!) and these guys got terminated due to it. SUCKS to be them.

Anyway, I don’t play but certainly don’t see any harm in it as long as it doesn’t interfere with people getting their jobs done. So that’s what I told the news.

Will I get 15 seconds of fame (or even 5 seconds)? I don’t know – it was footage for the 4 o’clock news and I’ll be working — not watching tv!

There Is No Self Apart From The Whole

A myriad bubbles were floating on the surface of a stream. ‘What are you?’ I cried to them as they drifted by. ‘I am a bubble, of course’ nearly a myriad bubbles answered, and there was surprise and indignation in their voices as they passed. But, here and there, a lonely bubble answered, ‘We are this stream’, and there was neither surprise nor indignation in their voices, but just a quiet certitude.
