Apple-Powered Techno-Lust

Once again Apple introduces an incredible product line update. The new Powerbook and Powerbook Pro laptops are gorgeous in the design details and are a solid step up in the technical specs.

Visit apple.com for all the info.

Both versions include new aluminum unibody cases, gorgeous ultra-thin backlit LCD displays, high-performance NVIDIA integrated graphics and a cool new etched-glass buttonless track pad. Additionally, there is the option to upgrade the hard drive on both units to a 128GB Solid State Drive.

Quick specs from www.apple.com:

The new 13-inch MacBook:

  • 13.3-inch LED-backlit display
  • 2.0GHz or 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
  • Up to 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
  • 4.5 pounds; 0.95 inch thin
  • NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics
  • Price starting at $1299

The new 15-inch MacBook Pro:

  • 15.4-inch LED-backlit display
  • 2.4GHz, 2.53GHz, or 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
  • Up to 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
  • 5.5 pounds; 0.95 inch thin
  • NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT discrete graphics
  • NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics
  • FireWire 800 port
  • ExpressCard/34 slot
  • Price starting at $1999

The new MacBook Pro features both integrated and discrete NVIDIA graphics processors which gives the user the ability to choose between the GeForce 9400M for everyday tasks and better battery performance or the GeForce 9600M GT for intensive tasks and “turbocharged” performance.

Notably, the Firewire port has been dropped from the MacBook, though a Firewire 800 port is still provided on the Pro model. This shouldn’t present any problem with new peripherals but could be a concern with legacy peripherals.

Overall, the technical and performance specs for the regular MacBook have been greatly improved – no longer does it look like a hobbled step-brother to the Pro. And the price still represents and incredible value!
