SayNDial App For iPhone
One of the most conspicuously missing features on the iPhone has been the ability to voice-dial. I’ve often wondered why Apple didn’t find a way to include that feature – especially since it’s one that has been available on lesser cellphones for years.
Fortunately, a company called Metaphore Solutions has come to the rescue with an application called SayNDial.
SayNDial is an Interactive Voice Recognition (IVR) application that does exactly what you might expect — it automatically recognized the name you say and dials the number for you. This is extremely helpful in instances where focusing on your address book in the iPhone would be hazardous — such as when you are driving.
The application does have an interesting twist that is different from voice-dial apps on other cellphones. Whereas on other cellphones the app is running against the local database on the phone, the SayNDial app requires you to allow your contact list to be uploaded to a SayNDial server. Then when you invoke the app and say a name, it records your voice, uploads the recording to SayNDial, conducts the query on the server-side then sends the result back to the iPhone for dialing in the phone app.
It sounds like this would take a long time but it actually happens very quickly. The one obvious catch is that it requires data services to be active at the time you want to use the dialer. That means if you happen to be in a place where 3G or Edge services aren’t available, you won’t be able to successfully use SayNDial.
That’s sort of a bummer but it’s only happened a couple of times to me here in the DFW area. Overall, I give this application a complete thumbs-up. And here’s the bonus — SayNDial is FREE from the Apple AppStore!
