Capt. Charles Moore On The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

We live in a disposable society that was created along with the invention of plastics following World War II. Convenient, disposable products were created to “free the common housewife” from the drudgery of cleaning and reusing household goods. Unfortunately, there was little thought or concern given to the long-term existence of the refuse or how to deal with it.

The Sort Of Spam Blog Comment That Bugs Me The Most …

I decline and delete a whole lot of spam comments every day just as anybody else with a blog does. And I get huge amounts of porn, product and other types of spam. But this example is the sort of spam that bugs me the most.

I will state for the record that I am anything but a religious person. I’m not an athiest but I really really hate having religious views pushed on me.

Racism is another one of my pet peeves. Seriously, this sort of bullshit has NO place in my world. So to have spam pop up on my site that combines BOTH evangelical religious views and racism combined in a single message makes me want to go postal. (more…)

Left-hand Drive vs. Right-hand Drive … How Did It Originate?

As I was driving to work this morning, for whatever reason, I began to think about our traffic systems … specifically about the right-hand and left-hand drive systems.

At first, the differences of these systems only occurred to me regarding modern automobile traffic and what the motivations might have been for the two systems. Does it have anything to do with the specific environments within which automobiles were developed? Does it have anything to do with most people being right-handed? Might it have anything to do with individual vs. group focus in different societies? Many potential scenarios run through my imagination.

I began researching the issue on the web and discovered that the origins of these systems began as far back as Roman times. (more…)
