Memory Of Analog Bliss and The Panic Of Lost Pasts

As I sit here listening to The Beatle’s “You Never Give Me Your Money” from the Abby Road album, my mind has wondered back in time through vivid memories of simple moments in my youth. Moments representing the simple analog bliss of being… golden light of late afternoon peeping around the edges of sunglasses long ago lost.

Long ShadowsIt was a time before the digital world began to replace the analog world that I grew up in. Cars had no computers. They were mechanical and driven by material, physical means. Computers were still a novelty in the home. They were still high tech and almost sci-fi. Hand-held video game systems didn’t exist. Arcades were where we played video games – for $.25 per game! The staff was incredibly hospitable, surprising us with rose petals and a congratulatory card on the dining table and providing us with complimentary appetizers and chocolate truffles for dessert. The waitstaff and the manager were incredible … charming and attentative. They really made the three of us feel very special and welcome at the restaurant. (more…)

Alternative To Running An Application As A Windows Service

Here’s a situation that I recently encountered that presented an interesting challenge…

I was working with a Windows Server on which I needed to run a Java application as a Windows Service so that the app would not shut down as I logged off of my Remote Desktop Connection session. The kicker was that my user account for that server does not have sufficient permissions to set up a Windows Service for it.
