Joomla! 1.5 + Virtuemart 1.1.5
I’m working on writing up an opinion of my recent experiences with Joomla 1.5 + Virtuemart 1.1.5. My initial urge is to express a pretty negative impression.
However, that would hardly be fair or balanced because Joomla and Virtuemart definitely have their place in the world and I’m certain that the legacy site that I spent a bit of time working on was not properly implemented within them. Nonetheless, I ran into some interesting positives and negatives with these systems and would share some information about them… and probably ask a few questions, too.

The Personal Web Site Is Dead.
It occurs to me, after not really too much thought, that the concept of the personal web site is dead. Or, at least, very nearly dead. Social media has rapidly antiquated personal websites into irrelevancy. The most prominent lifeline being RSS feeds from sites… and even these are quickly being overtaken by professional feeds.
With the evolution of social media sites such as Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, Flickr, YouTube and so on, the communicative needs of the individual have been facilitated on a much higher level than individual personal web sites were capable of. Additionally, social media has removed virtually all skill-based barriers to an individual’s desire to share information and interact with others via the internet. (more…)
